Begin with a purpose
An interest in distillation may start with a garden harvest, a fascination with aroma, or a future product idea. Those are different starting points. Describe the material available and the desired outcome before choosing equipment.
Separate the terms
In steam distillation, volatile aromatic compounds travel with steam and are collected after cooling. Essential oil and hydrosol are distinct outputs; hydrosol is not simply essential oil mixed into water. The character of the result depends on the plant material and the process.
Make a batch sheet
Useful records include plant identity, harvest date, material condition, equipment used, run observations, collection details, and cleaning records. Comparing batches requires more than recording the final volume.
Prepare for a guided discussion
Bring the equipment make and model if a still is already owned, the available plant material, and the intended use of the output. Operation should follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and appropriate hands-on training. This guide is a conversation starter, not an operating procedure.
